Does birth time change your Chinese zodiac animal?
No—not the lunar-year animal returned by this calculator. It asks for your Gregorian birth date and checks which lunar year that date belongs to. It does not ask for your birth hour or calculate an hour pillar. Use the Chinese zodiac calculator with your full date, especially if you were born near Chinese New Year.

The Hong Kong Observatory describes the twelve animals as a year-recording cycle. Its stems-and-branches reference separately describes year, month, day and hour in the Eight Characters. A year-animal result is only one part of that broader system.
A practical check at a year boundary
On this site's date-based method, someone with a recorded birth date of February 16, 2026 gets Snake whether the recorded clock time is morning or evening. Someone with a recorded date of February 17, 2026 gets Horse. The input that changes the result here is the date across the New Year boundary, not the hour entered on that same date. The Hong Kong Observatory's February 2026 calendar places Lunar New Year's Day on February 17.
If your birth record, time zone conversion or local civil date is uncertain near midnight, establish the correct calendar date first. This calculator accepts a date; it cannot decide which date a recorded instant should become in another time zone.

Is a birth year alone enough?
