Chinese zodiac compatibility · birth-date method
Can you compare Chinese zodiac compatibility by birth year alone?
Use both full birth dates. A Gregorian birth year alone can assign the wrong lunar-year animal to someone born before Chinese New Year. That can change whether this site's limited traditional pairing check says “harmony,” “clash,” or neither. It still cannot predict a real relationship.
February 16, 2026Snake + Rat → neither named pair
February 17, 2026Horse + Rat → Six Clashes
Four date checks that change the label
The partner's animal in each row is fixed. Only the first person's date changes across that year's Chinese New Year. The labels below follow this site's Six Harmonies and Six Clashes check; “neither” means this limited check has no named pair.
| First person's date | Their animal | Fixed partner | This site's label |
|---|---|---|---|
| February 16, 2026 | Snake | Rat | Neither |
| February 17, 2026 | Horse | Rat | Six Clashes |
| February 5, 2027 | Horse | Goat | Six Harmonies |
| February 6, 2027 | Goat | Goat | Same animal; no harmony or clash assigned |
For the 2026 pair, the Hong Kong Observatory's 2026 calendar places the new lunar year on February 17. For 2027, its 2027 calendar places it on February 6. The animal and pair labels are reproducible in the calculator linked above.
How to check your own pair
- Enter each person's complete Gregorian birth date in the compatibility calculator.
- Read the lunar-year animal assigned to each date. If either birthday is in January or February, check the displayed boundary carefully.
- Read the named pair, if any, as a traditional cultural label. The tool checks only Six Harmonies and Six Clashes, not a full birth chart or a relationship outcome.
For a closer look at why the year-only and full-date modes differ, see the two-input-mode comparison. For a different question about the 2027 boundary, see the Start of Spring versus Lunar New Year guide.
Quick answers
Are two Gregorian birth years enough?
Not by themselves: they do not reveal whether either birthday preceded Chinese New Year. If you independently know both birthdays were on or after that cutoff, the Gregorian-year animals match this site's lunar-year animals. Complete dates let the calculator check directly.
Does “neither” mean incompatible?
No. It means this calculator found neither of the two named branch relationships it checks.
Does a clash predict a breakup?
No. This is a traditional label, not a measured or predictive relationship score.
Method and sources
The boundary dates come from the Hong Kong Observatory annual conversion tables linked above. The site's compatibility page describes its pair sets and links its source for those traditional branch relationships. The four comparisons and diagram on this page were made specifically for this site's input and pairing rules.
